Instructor Competency Program

College and other vocational instructors teach academic, technical and vocational subjects to adult students at community colleges, university colleges, technical institutes, language schools and other vocational schools. Trainers are employed by companies and governments to deliver in-house training and development courses.

After completion of this program, College Instructors will be able to work independently and be able to prepare, organize and deliver teaching materials in an effective manner.

Work futures ranks the future prospects for career choice factors at 5 out of 5 stars. In comparison to other occupations, workforce characteristics are above average.

Employment prospects for this occupational group are expected to be above average in upcoming years. College and vocational instructors are in demand in all regions of B.C.

In addition, there is increasing demand by businesses for skills upgrading, particularly in some technical and applied technology fields. This will likely increase the need for programs of this nature, and will thereby increase demand for instructors in these fields.

This program is recommended for all instructors (or those who wish to enter into this exciting and rewarding field) as professional development in order to enhance skills in effective lesson plan development and classroom activities (critical thinking) while using instructional technology; understand the fundamentals of Office Suite; develop methods to create and use various assessment methods; understand how to effectively address classroom situations and challenges.

Using theory learned in the courses, instructors will be able to perform the following duties:
- Teach students using a systematic plan of lectures, demonstrations, discussion groups, laboratory work, shop sessions, seminars, case studies, field assignments and independent or group projects
- Apply the theories and principles of adult learning
- Create an atmosphere of mutual learning and respect in a classroom setting
- Prepare all necessary resources for a lesson implementation in a way that follows current trends and teaching philosophies modeling a “commitment to grow” style
- Implement activities and lesson plans which have clear objectives with measureable results and involve the learners
- Use media in an effective, efficient and appropriate manner during the lesson presentation
- Follow developed philosophy of teaching, acting in an ethical and professional manner
