Business Administration professionals represent a growing proportion of the total clerical and administrative positions. The fast-growing small business sector increasingly requires the services of this occupational group. This occupation is usually not subject to major swings related to business cycles, but is affected more by changes in organizations and technology. Due to the large size of this group, even an average growth rate will provide a significant number of job openings.

Business Administrative officers oversee and set up administrative procedures, set work priorities and manage the supply of administrative services, such as office space, supplies and security services. They may also handle some cash and direct the work of clerical staff. They are employed throughout the private and public sectors. This is a very large occupational group in British Columbia.

The role of administrative officer can vary tremendously from office to office. Typical duties would include handling work assignments for staff and setting up and maintaining administrative procedures. For example, administrative officers establish work priorities, delegate work to office support staff, and ensure deadlines are met and procedures are followed. They oversee and coordinate office procedures and routines, and put new methods in place when necessary.
